May 2012 Illinois Senior Medicare Fraud Tip PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 May 2012 15:30

Chicago, IL – May 5, 2012.  The Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC) is a participating agency in the Medicare Fraud Project led by the Coalition of Limited English Speaking Elderly in the Chicago area.  FACHIC will be sharing a monthly Medicare fraud tip to seniors in English and Tagalog.  Please feel free to share the tip widely.

May 2012 Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol Program

Many people in Illinois have been receiving phone calls from someone offering “free home services from Medicare.”  These phone calls are a scam. Medicare will never call you to offer “free services.” These callers are trying to get people’s Medicare numbers over the phone, so that they can bill Medicare for thousands of dollars in skilled home care services that they do not provide.  If anyone calls on the phone and asks for your Medicare number, hang up the phone!  Do not accept any services from anyone who calls on the phone or comes to your door.  If you need health care services, call your doctor first to get a prescription.  Your doctor can then help you find a legitimate company to provide the services. If you have given your Medicare number away to someone who called on the phone or came to your door, report it to the Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol Program at AgeOptions: (800)699-9043.

Mayo 2012 Ang Programang Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol

Chicago, IL – March 29, 2012.  On Sunday, March 4, 2012, the Illinois Chapter of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations held a luncheon forum in Skokie, Illinois in celebration of International Women's History Month. The theme of the forum was "Preparing to Face Economic Uncertainties” with a focus on health and social issues. Two members of the Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC) served as forum panelists.

Dr. Yasmin Sacro, FACHIC Medical Director and Assistant Professor of Medicine from the University of Chicago Primary Care Group, spoke to the group about identifying signs and symptoms of heart attack in men and women.  The presentation included a group discussion on the common and uncommon presenting symptoms of myocardial infarction (heart attack), which can range from chest pain and shortness of breath to nausea and jaw or neck pain.  Discussion also included tips on how to manage modifiable risk factors (weight, smoking, blood pressure and blood sugar control) in the setting of non-modifiable risk factors (age, sex, family history).  Particularly emphasized was the importance of visiting and discussing personal risk factors and symptoms with one's own primary care health provider.

John Paul (JP) Jael, FACHIC Collaborations volunteer and Program Coordinator at Asian Human Services, presented on different public programs and benefits available to the community.  JP discussed the different challenges that may prevent Filipino Americans from asking for assistance, including cultural and language barriers and limited knowledge of social service programs presently available to them.  JP also shared practical strategies on how to obtain more information regarding public programs, including looking in Filipino newspapers, networking with church contacts, using the internet, checking with a public library and calling 311.  Community members may also contact the FACHIC volunteer licensed social worker, Sam del Rosario, for social work and case management services that are free by phone (312) 962-7748 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Watch out for prescription drug fraud – it can cost you and your insurance a lot of money and put your health at risk!  When you go to the pharmacy, count your pills to make sure you receive your full prescription amount.  Also, pay attention to how your pills look, smell, etc. – if you notice any changes, ask your pharmacist why your pills have changed. Finally, read your Explanation of Benefits from your prescription drug insurance plan. Watch for charges for prescriptions that you did not receive, charges for prescriptions that are different than the ones that you receive, or charges for more than what you received. If you have questions about anything you see on these statements, contact the Illinois SMP Program at AgeOptions for help: (800)699-9043.

Chicago, IL – March 7, 2012.

March 2012 Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol Program

Mr. Jones received a visit from someone who told him they could give him a free scooter – all he needed to do was give the visitor his Medicare number, and they would deliver his scooter to his door. Mr. Jones gave the person his Medicare number, and a week later, he got a scooter. He was very happy. About three months later, the scooter stopped working. Mr. Jones tried to call the company that delivered the scooter to get the scooter fixed, but no one would call him back. When he called Medicare to find out how to get his scooter fixed, he found out that the company had billed Medicare for an electric wheelchair instead of a scooter, stealing thousands of dollars from Mr. Jones’s health care benefits!

The story above is a very common scam. Many people do not realize that their benefits have been stolen until they need an electric wheelchair, and then they can’t get one because Medicare will not pay for it. NEVER accept anything from someone who calls on the phone or comes to your door. If you need a piece of equipment, you must talk to your doctor first. Your doctor should write a prescription or an order for any services or supplies that you need. If someone tells you that they can get you something without an order from your doctor, it is probably a scam! If you have questions or want to learn more about health care fraud, contact the Senior Medicare Patrol program at AgeOptions: (800)699-9043 or visit www.illinoissmp.org.

Marso 2012 Ang Programang Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol

Chicago, IL – February 8, 2012.  The Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC) dedicated its energy and yuletide cheer to those in need through its 2011 Parol Program.  This third annual event brought volunteers and businesses together to address the needs of older adults in the Filipino community during the holiday season.

Highlights of the 2011 Parol Program included Christmas card decorating workshops at Uncle Mike’s Place (1700 West Grand Avenue, Chicago) on December 10, 2011 and at Marigold (5752 North California, Chicago) on December 11, 2011.  FACHIC brought together over twenty volunteers to decorate, assemble, and send 230 cards which included an in case of emergency contact form.  Volunteer decorators spanned from children to adults, all satisfied with their product and happy to pay respect to older adults in the community.

FACHIC also recruited volunteers to assist with holiday wellness check phone calls.  Approximately 250 calls were made and five gift baskets, donated by Mom’s Bake Shop (2415 West Peterson, Chicago), were delivered to high risk individuals.

FACHIC is proud of its expanding Parol Program, having added one additional card decorating workshop since 2011 and partnering with more local businesses than ever before.  If you are interested in volunteering with our 2012 Parol Program or donating to this worthy cause, contact FACHIC at (312) 962-7748 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. February 2012 Illinois Senior Medicare Fraud Tip PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 07 February 2012 19:17

Chicago, IL – February 7, 2012.

February 2012 Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol Program

Medicare will only cover home health services (a nurse or therapist who comes to your home) if you are “homebound.”  If you are “homebound,” you cannot leave your home on your own without some kind of assistance. Home health services include physical therapy, speech therapy, and skilled nursing services.  Basic care services like bathing, help with getting dressed, cooking, cleaning, etc. are NOT skilled nursing services.  If someone offers you “free” basic care services in your home, this is fraud – just say no!  If you need home health services, contact your doctor. Your doctor must write a prescription for home health services before you receive them.  Never accept home health services from anyone who comes to your door or calls you on the telephone, even if they tell you that your doctor sent them!

Pebrero 2012 Ang Programang Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol
