FILIPINO AMERICAN COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR Free Health Screenings, Referrals, and Information PDF Print E-mail

Chicago, IL – The Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC) in partnership with the Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago (FACC) Volunteer Health Services will be hosting its 5th Annual Community Health Fair on Sunday, September 25, 2011.  The health fair will be held at the Rizal Heritage Center located at 1332 West Irving Park Road from 9 am to 1 pm.  This is an open event available to the Filipino community and other ethnic groups.  Last year, nearly 300 people attended this free event.

Health screenings will be provided at no cost by a number of service providers from different hospitals, home health, and other health and social service agencies in the Chicago area.  Screenings include: blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, diabetes, dental, podiatry, eye and many more.

In addition to the health screenings, information will be available to participants on nutrition, physician referrals, parenting, heart disease and diabetes prevention, All Kids/FamilyCare, and other public benefits.  A licensed clinical social worker will also be on site for free consultations.

The Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago (FACC) Volunteer Health Services is composed of volunteer doctors, nurses, and other health and social health providers that provide free health screenings and check-ups to dozens of low-income Filipino seniors and uninsured individuals every Saturday during the Filipino American Veterans and Seniors Program and every 4th Sunday of the month during the Monthly Food Distribution Program at the Rizal Center.  Dr. Rufino Crisostomo is the Medical Director of this program.

PASSPORT TO THE PHILIPPINES: JUNE 9, 11 and 12, 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Chicago, Illinois – June 9, 2011.  The Passport to the Philippines is part of the Passport to the World series at the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier that showcases the arts and traditions of Chicago’s many ethnic groups.  This year, the Passport to the Philippines will be celebrated the weekend of June 11 and 12, 2011 with a kick off event on June 9. 

The organizing Passport to the Philippines committee will present a series of programs, performances, workshops and exhibits that authentically represents Filipino culture and traditions.  Planned events include a parade of costumes, a taste of the Philippines including a healthier version of halo halo, a traditional Filipino dessert, and demonstrations of martial arts and traditional children’s games.  Filipino American artists, teachers, students, and volunteers will be on hand to greet and help museum’s visitors with ongoing activities.  Participants include students from area schools and colleges, civic groups, music bands and rondalla, martial arts experts, dance and performing arts companies, and cultural and historical associations.

The Philippines joined the Passport to the World program at the Chicago Children’s Museum in June 2008.  The Passport to Philippines is now in its fourth year and will be held on the second weekend of June to celebrate the Philippine Independence Day on June 12.  Special presentations are planned to commemorate Jose Rizal’s 150 year anniversary. The Philippines was chosen to be included the Passport series because the Filipino American community has a sizable ethnic presence and rich historical contributions to the diversity of Chicago neighborhoods.

FACHIC SEEKS VOLUNTEER PAROL PROGRAM COORDINATOR PDF Print E-mail

Chicago, IL - May 29, 2011. The Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC) is actively seeking a volunteer Program Coordinator for its 2011 Parol Program. This is a non-paid position and candidates are expected to work two to six hours per week. Applicants should be individuals willing to share FACHIC’s mission of serving the Filipino community and ideally have an interest in working with seniors. Background and interest in working in community health or social work is helpful. Volunteer position to begin August 2011.

The Parol Program was established in 2009 to address the needs of seniors in the Filipino community during the holidays. The Program Coordinator will work to continue and improve successful events of past years including a Christmas card mailing with community health resources, home visits with gift baskets of ‘necessity’ items, and conducting well being calls for those most in need. Most importantly, the Program Coordinator will play an integral role in preparing for the 2011 Parol Program by recruiting and overseeing volunteers for holiday outreach event participation.

FACHIC volunteer staff will work hand-in-hand with the Program Coordinator, but the position also requires independent work and organization. Ideal applicants must be able to communicate effectively with volunteers and clients. Experience in program marketing is desired but not required. Finally, the Program Coordinator should be committed to helping a start-up nonprofit grow and increase their capacity to serve. Passport To The Phillipines Postcard Design Winner From Bolingbrook, Illinois PDF Print E-mail

Chicago, Illinois - The Passport to the Philippines Committee at the Chicago Children’s Museum proudly announces the winner of the 2011 postcard design contest in celebration of the Philippine Independence Week in Chicago on June 9. 11 and 12th at Navy Pier.  Jeraldine “Jeri” Millan, 14 years old from Bolingbrook, Illinois took the first prize. Jeri is currently an eight grader at Gregory Middle School in Naperville.  She has been involved in arts, music and dance since her early childhood days. Her activities include singing, reading, hip-hop and cultural dancing, and playing the cello in addition to eating, sleeping, facebooking, and online gaming.

Jeri’s winning entry “Passport to the Philippines” will be used in postcard mailing to invite families in celebration of the Philippine Week at the Chicago Children’s Museum.  A facsimile of the postcard can be viewed here:  http://passporttophilippines.org/PressRelease.aspx.

FACHIC Supports Community with Free Social Work Consultations PDF Print E-mail

Drawing focus from its mission to improve the health status of the Filipino community, the Filipino American Community Health Initiative in Chicago (FACHIC) is again offering seniors and their families social work consultations free of charge.  Consultations are held by an Illinois Licensed Clinical Social Worker who can provide information in the following areas:  housing, home safety modifications, tax breaks for seniors, social programming, prescription medication, Medicare/Medicaid, medical referrals, estate planning, social programming, and Social Security/Public Aid.  

Drop-in consultations are held on a rotating basis between the Jose Rizal Heritage Center during its monthly food pantry distribution (1332 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago), Pilipino American Social Services (PASS) (1551 W. Irving Park Rd., #1, Chicago) and the Levy Center where the Filipino American Grandparents Association of Chicago (FAGPAC) meet (2019 W.
